Coverage is pulled from dozens of reputable, paywall-free news outlets — not raw social media, not the open web at large. When several outlets cover the same event, their reporting is combined into one entry, so what you read reflects the consensus across sources rather than a single outlet's framing. As a story develops, its entry updates in place instead of spawning duplicates.
How claims get checked
Fast-moving stories — especially around active conflicts — often carry claims that haven't been confirmed yet: a stated casualty count, a viral clip, a government denial. Rather than repeating those at face value or guessing, the Verification Desk checks them against independent reporting and existing fact-checks, and shows its work: what supports a claim, what contradicts it, and where it stands right now. “Unverified” is a normal, common outcome here, not something papered over to sound more confident than the evidence allows — a claim only gets marked confirmed or false when a real, citable source backs that up.
How images get chosen
Photos come from the source articles themselves or verified public photos of the people, places, and things involved — never generated. An ongoing check compares images across stories to catch cases where the same generic or mismatched photo has been reused, and corrects it.
