Claim
a claim by a man accused of plotting attacks on Iran International journalists that he was deceiving the Revolutionary Guards
Attributed to the accused man
Evidence
Searches found Iran International reports of the trial at Woolwich Crown Court, plus a Guardian report syndicated on News Beep. They say defendant Mostafa Sepahvand testified that he only appeared to cooperate with Iranian handlers because of threats to him and his family. He says he deliberately sabotaged the operation, and he repeatedly told the court "I played them". Prosecutor Emlyn Jones put it to him that every time he said he was playing the IRGC he was lying, and that the explanation was invented after his arrest. Sepahvand denied this. He and two co-defendants deny National Security Act charges. The trial is ongoing and no verdict was found. I found no Reuters, AFP, Bellingcat or EUvsDisinfo fact-check on the claim.
Assessment
It is well documented that Sepahvand made this claim in court, but the prosecution contests it and the jury has not ruled, so nothing independent shows whether it is true. No fact-checker has assessed it.
Confidence
Some independent corroboration was found, but it isn't yet conclusive.
