Multiple independent outlets reported on September 3, 2026 that a Russian Aerospace Forces general was shot near the Engels-2 strategic bomber airbase in Saratov Oblast. The Moscow Times reported Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed a criminal probe into an 'attempt on the life of a serviceman' in Engels, but did not name the victim. Unverified reports, originating from Russian Telegram channels (cited by Gazeta.ru/Engels Online and Mash) and relayed by Euromaidan Press, TVP World, and Eastern Herald, identified the victim as Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, who Ukrainian prosecutors had charged in absentia days earlier over the July 2024 Okhmatdyt children's hospital strike. Outlets consistently describe him as shot twice (torso and face) by a motorcycle gunman and airlifted to Moscow in critical/serious condition.
