Numerous independent mainstream outlets (CNN, Euronews, Meduza, Kyiv Post, Ukrainska Pravda, Yahoo News republishing wire coverage, Ukrinform) reported on September 3, 2026 that a Russian Aerospace Forces officer was shot by a motorcycle-riding gunman near the village of Probuzhdeniye in Engels district, Saratov Oblast, and hospitalized in serious/critical condition before being transferred to Moscow. Russian pro-military Telegram channels with security-service ties (Mash, Baza, Shot, ASTRA, 'Dosye Shpiona') identified the wounded officer as Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division. Several outlets, including CNN, Euronews and Meduza, explicitly note that Russian authorities have NOT officially confirmed the victim's identity — the identification rests on Telegram sources and, per Euronews, Ukrainian security sources. Separately, it is well corroborated that Ukraine's SBU announced on August 31, 2026 that it charged Varpakhovich in absentia for ordering the July 8, 2024 Kh-101 missile strike on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt children's hospital, which killed two/three people and injured dozens, including children. I found no fact-check specifically on this claim from Reuters Fact Check, AFP Fact Check, Bellingcat, or EUvsDisinfo — the event appears too recent for those outlets to have published a dedicated verification piece.
