The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it had begun striking targets in southern Lebanon in response to what it called a "blatant violation of the ceasefire" by Hezbollah, issuing evacuation warnings for residents in several areas — the first such warnings in weeks. Lebanon's health ministry said one person was killed in the strikes. The attacks came while US-sponsored negotiations between Israel and Lebanon were under way in Rome. The evacuation warnings and strikes marked one of the more significant Israeli escalations in Lebanon since the ceasefire took effect, and coincided with reports of a large Israeli-triggered explosion in the southern town of Haddatha. Israel has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of rebuilding military infrastructure south of the Litani River, while Lebanese officials have accused Israel of violating the truce through continued strikes and its ongoing troop presence. The timing of the strikes cast uncertainty over the Rome talks.
