A New York Times investigation based on interviews with roughly two dozen activists detained after attempting to sail to Gaza detailed further allegations of mistreatment in Israeli custody, including physical assault and, in one instance, sexual assault. The report expands on earlier accounts from participants in the aid flotillas. Israel has repeatedly denied the allegations. The claims have fuelled diplomatic friction with the home countries of detained activists and added to international scrutiny of Israel's handling of foreign nationals intercepted at sea.
