Iraqi security sources told Al Jazeera that air defence systems intercepted drones over the northern Kurdish province of Erbil early on Thursday. Footage circulating online showed drone remnants falling in a residential area near Erbil international airport. No injuries or casualties were reported. Erbil, which hosts US and coalition personnel, has repeatedly been targeted by drones attributed to Iran-aligned armed groups, and the incident points to continued spillover of the US-Iran confrontation into Iraqi territory. Responsibility for the launch was not immediately claimed or confirmed.
