Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Washington implements the commitments set out in a memorandum of understanding, including lifting its naval blockade. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, separately mocked President Donald Trump's declaration that the Strait of Hormuz was US territory, writing that the gap between America's inability to reopen the waterway and its claim to own it exceeded the 7,000 miles between Washington and the strait. On the diplomatic track, Trump said no talks with Tehran were scheduled, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed the United States was "begging" for negotiations. The competing statements underline that the two sides remain far apart despite the existence of a memorandum of understanding, and the continued closure of the strait keeps a significant share of global oil shipments disrupted.
