A prolonged and intense heat dome has gripped Florida and the broader Southeast US for over a week, driving repeated Heat Advisories in the Tampa Bay area with feels-like temperatures reaching 108-112 degrees on multiple days. The extreme heat culminated when Miami reached an all-time record high of 100 degrees — a mark not seen since 1942 — after unusually dry air allowed temperatures to spike despite the city's typical humidity. Heat alerts have been in effect statewide in Florida, and cooling centers, such as one opened at Vestal United Methodist Church near Knoxville, were activated to help residents cope.
