US President Donald Trump announced what he called the 'most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,' targeting Iran with sweeping new sanctions. In a social media post, Trump described the campaign as 'Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,' framing it as part of a broader push to force Tehran into concessions following the US-Iran war. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has since detailed the effort, vowing the US will impose 'the toughest sanctions in history' on Iran in what officials are calling an 'economic D-Day,' as soaring commodity and shipping prices raise inflation concerns. Bessent also urged China to 'get with the programme' and back the proposed sanctions, arguing Beijing would benefit from a reopened Strait of Hormuz and lower energy prices, while declining to say publicly whether Washington might target Chinese firms doing business with Iran.
