Tropical Storm Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph as it approached Hawaii's Big Island, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue a hurricane warning and forecasts of life-threatening flooding and landslides. The storm ultimately passed the Big Island without a direct landfall but dumped heavy rain across the archipelago and downgraded back to a tropical storm as it moved on, sunday. More than 130,000 households lost power across Hawaii's three largest islands, and at least one person was killed. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said officials were still assessing whether additional storm-related deaths occurred as Big Island residents began cleanup and damage assessments over the following days.
