Hurricane Lala strengthened into a Category 1 storm with 75 mph winds before weakening to a tropical storm as it passed Hawaii's Big Island without making a direct landfall, still dumping heavy rain and high winds across the islands. More than 130,000 households lost power across Hawaii's three largest islands, at least one person was killed, and Gov. Josh Green said officials were investigating whether other storm-related deaths occurred. The Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary reported all of its more than 700 cats survived, though the facility sustained $15,000-$20,000 in damage and is seeking donations. Damage assessments and cleanup began over the following days as residents worked to recover. Compounding concerns, Tropical Storm Moke was tracking toward Hawaii, threatening to bring another round of heavy rain and wind to areas still recovering from Lala.
