Hawaii is bracing for Tropical Storm Moke, which could dump over a foot of additional rain and bring strong winds to the Big Island even as the state is still recovering from Hurricane Lala earlier in August. Lala, which weakened to a tropical storm before passing without a direct landfall, killed at least one person and left more than 130,000 households without power across Hawaii's three largest islands. Gov. Josh Green said officials are still assessing whether additional storm-related deaths occurred, and cleanup and damage assessments began on the Big Island over the weekend. Among the recovery stories, the Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary reported that all more than 700 cats survived Lala safely, though the facility sustained $15,000 to $20,000 in damage and is seeking donations. The back-to-back storms underscore the compounding strain on Hawaii's infrastructure and residents as they face a second round of heavy rain and wind from Moke.
