Israeli censors have permitted publication of a report revealing that Israel conducted direct hostage negotiations with Hamas beginning shortly after the October 7 attack, continuing until 2025. The talks were reportedly led by then-Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar and were approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Israeli television reporting. The disclosure follows earlier reporting that Netanyahu also privately contacted Hamas during the 2014 Gaza war, adding to a pattern of undisclosed direct engagement between Israel and the group despite official policy of not negotiating with it. The revelations could fuel domestic debate over the government's handling of hostage negotiations throughout the war.
