Tropical Storm Karina strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean and quickly intensified into a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph, located about 1,020 miles west-southwest of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Forecasters said it could become a major hurricane, though it remains well away from land.
