Tropical Depression Five formed in the Gulf of Mexico in late August 2026 and quickly strengthened into Tropical Storm Edouard, prompting warnings for Texas and Louisiana. The storm made landfall along the northwest Gulf Coast near Louisiana, at times threatening to reach hurricane strength, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warning that flooding was the biggest danger. After landfall, Edouard weakened into a tropical depression but continued dumping heavy rain across southeast Texas, with parts of Hardin County receiving 18 to 20 inches of rain over two days, flooding homes and roadways. The National Hurricane Center had forecast 3 to 7 inches of rain broadly with isolated totals up to 12 inches, though actual totals in hard-hit areas far exceeded that. The storm's slow-moving remnants continued to cause flooding concerns well after landfall.
