Researchers at UC San Diego demonstrated that a key cellular enzyme, RNA polymerase, can accurately read a synthetic eight-letter genetic alphabet, doubling the four DNA letters used by all known life. Detailed imaging showed the enzyme handles synthetic letters similarly to natural ones, bringing scientists closer to building expanded biological systems capable of new functions.
