UCLA researchers discovered that radial glia stem cells, which produce much of the cerebral cortex, are guided by glucose processing and physical contact with signals from the thalamus, influencing which neuron types are produced—including upper-layer neurons especially prominent in humans—shedding new light on how the human brain develops before birth.
