US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow on Saturday, September 5-6, holding roughly three hours of talks with Vladimir Putin, before flying to Kyiv to meet President Zelensky along with national security advisers from France, the UK and Germany. The visits are part of a renewed US-led push to revive peace talks and discuss de-escalation steps between Moscow and Kyiv. Zelensky told Axios that the envoys discussed potential de-escalation steps with both Moscow and Kyiv ahead of and during the winter, and said Putin 'does not want to upset' Trump and is 'ready to discuss' peace ideas. The comments suggest continued, if cautious, engagement from the Kremlin in the US-brokered diplomatic track.
