Australia has proposed a new law that would let users opt out of algorithm-driven social media feeds, amid growing scrutiny of Big Tech platforms over addictive algorithmic design. The law aims to give Australians greater control over their online feeds. Under the planned legislation, major platforms such as Meta, Google and TikTok would be required to offer users the ability to switch off algorithmic recommendations, with a government minister warning that companies failing to comply could face 'substantial' financial penalties.
