Indonesia's dangerous underground peat fires are intensifying early in the 2026 fire season as a strengthening El Niño and severe drought dry out wetlands. These smoldering fires can burn for months, releasing more fine particles and pollutants than typical forest fires while being difficult for satellites to detect.
