An image-processing technique originally developed by NASA to enhance satellite photos is now being used by archaeologists to uncover traces of ancient human activity invisible in standard imagery. The algorithm, first applied to modern remote sensing, has been adapted to highlight subtle terrain and vegetation patterns linked to buried structures and historic land use. Researchers say the approach could accelerate the discovery of previously unknown archaeological sites across large, hard-to-survey regions, offering a faster and less invasive alternative to ground excavation for initial site identification.
