Scientists discovered that certain immune cells called neutrophils release a signal (Il-4) that calms harmful inflammation and enables zebrafish to regenerate damaged spinal cords. Without these cells, healing stalled, but adding Il-4 restored regeneration, raising hopes the mechanism could eventually be harnessed to improve spinal cord repair in humans.
