Ukrainian long-range drones struck a target further inside Russian territory than in any previously confirmed operation, in an attack reported on and around September 9, 2026. The War Zone (TWZ) described the operation as Ukraine's deepest drone strike on Russia ever, extending the reach of Kyiv's domestically produced long-range strike systems well beyond the front line and beyond the range of most earlier raids. The strike fit a wider pattern through 2026 in which Ukraine has targeted Russian energy, refining and military-industrial facilities far from the border in an effort to degrade Moscow's war economy and fuel supply. Because the attack reached deeper into Russia than earlier operations, it highlighted gaps in Russian rear-area air defence coverage and the growing range of Ukrainian unmanned systems. It also mattered politically, as Kyiv has argued that domestic strike capability reduces its dependence on Western permission to hit targets inside Russia.
