The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported that the cost to rebuild the section of I-40 damaged by Hurricane Helene has jumped to $2.8 billion. NCDOT said it currently expects to restore four lanes of traffic by late 2029 but is exploring ways to speed up the timeline.
