David Morales, a 27-year-old Rhode Island state representative and vocal critic of Israel, won the Democratic mayoral primary in Providence on Wednesday, unseating incumbent Mayor Brett Smiley despite being outspent roughly four-to-one. Morales is considered all but certain to win the general election in the heavily Democratic capital, which would make him the city's youngest-ever mayor. His victory, propelled partly by grassroots labor union support, is being cited as another sign of shifting Democratic Party sentiment on Israel and the Gaza war, following similar dynamics seen in other recent primary contests.
