An avalanche that broke off Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge, Kabardino-Balkaria, on September 6 buried a group of 33 climbers, most of them National Guard troops on a training trip. By September 9, rescuers had recovered 13 bodies, with search efforts continuing for four more people still missing.
