According to the Institute for the Study of War's campaign assessment published on September 10, 2026, Ukrainian forces carried out their deepest long-range drone strike of the full-scale war, hitting one of Russia's largest gas processing complexes at a distance of roughly 3,000 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory. The operation extended a months-long Ukrainian campaign aimed at Russian oil refineries, gas facilities and other energy infrastructure that finances and fuels Moscow's war effort. ISW framed the strike as evidence of a steadily expanding Ukrainian deep-strike envelope, achieved with domestically produced long-range unmanned systems. The reach of the attack matters because Russian energy assets far beyond the Urals had previously been considered comparatively safe from Ukrainian retaliation, allowing Moscow to concentrate air defenses closer to the front and to European Russia. Strikes of this depth force Russia to disperse limited air defense assets across a vastly larger territory and raise the economic cost of the war for the Kremlin. The assessment was published alongside ISW's daily front-line mapping and was reproduced by Kyiv Post on the same date. Ukrainian officials have consistently described such strikes as legitimate military targeting of the Russian war economy.
