Chinese scientists identified a previously overlooked atomic structure that forms on nickel oxide during methane conversion, finding it more effective at driving the reaction than the metallic nickel long thought responsible. The discovery enabled a low-nickel catalyst to match the performance of one containing ten times more metal.
