Grzegorz Braun, leader of the Confederation of the Polish Crown party, damaged a monument to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in a Polish village using a hammer, in a video that circulated widely. The UPA fought for Ukrainian independence during and after World War II but is also associated with wartime atrocities against Poles, making such monuments politically sensitive in Poland. Polish prosecutors have opened an investigation into the vandalism, though no charges have been filed against Braun. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry condemned the act, describing it as an example of 'political fringe elements' waging war on graves, and urged Polish authorities to restore the damaged memorial and pursue legal action against those responsible.
