Scientists created an ultra-small nanolaser designed to let microchips transmit data using light instead of electricity, a shift that could substantially cut computer energy use while boosting speed. Because thousands of the lasers could fit on a single chip, the advance could benefit data centers, smartphones, and medical sensors.
