Russia's Defence Ministry announced on September 12, 2026 that its forces had hit the Zaporizhstal steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, the Interpipe Steel complex in Dnipro, and several industrial facilities in Kryvyi Rih, including the Northern Iron Ore Beneficiation Works and the Novokryvorizkyi mining and processing plant. The claims accompanied a wider wave of strikes that Ukrainian officials said involved Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles, Kh-59/69 guided aerial missiles and about 129 strike drones. Damage was also reported to railway infrastructure in the Poltava region. The targeting of metallurgical and iron-ore facilities marked a continuation of Moscow's campaign against the economic backbone of Ukraine's war effort rather than purely military or energy targets. Steel and ore production are among Ukraine's largest sources of export revenue, so sustained damage to these plants carries budgetary as well as industrial consequences. Ukrainian authorities did not immediately confirm the extent of the damage claimed by the Russian side.
