On 13 September 2026, ScienceDaily reported findings that the three-dimensional folding and organization of DNA is disrupted in several types of brain cells affected by Alzheimer's disease. Researchers examining affected cell types found that these structural changes alter how important genes are switched on and off, pointing to a regulatory layer of the disease that has received relatively little attention. The work looked across distinct brain cell populations rather than treating brain tissue as a single unit. Most Alzheimer's research has focused on amyloid plaques, tau tangles and inflammation, so evidence that genome architecture itself is altered offers a different angle on how the disease progresses. If the changes in DNA looping and compartmentalization drive abnormal gene activity, they could eventually provide new biomarkers or therapeutic targets. The researchers cautioned that the findings describe associations in affected tissue and do not yet establish cause and effect. The report appeared alongside other aging and neurodegeneration studies published the same week.
