The interaction between the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans helps govern monsoon behavior, drought and flood patterns, and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which affects agriculture and disaster risk for billions of people. A weakening or shifting of that coupling would complicate seasonal forecasting models that assume the historical relationship holds. The researchers attributed the change to human-driven global warming rather than natural variability alone.
