A new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, is set to release September 18, following years in which the franchise's film rights holder Constantin Films hesitated to greenlight new movies after the poor box office of 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Cregger told The Hollywood Reporter that test screenings led him to trim an earlier, more comedic cut of the film, opting for a tone closer to his horror work rather than the humor found in some of his previous films.
