Researchers experimentally demonstrated the optical Magnus effect for the first time, showing that a tightly focused laser interacts most strongly with an atom slightly off-center from the beam, similar to the curve of a spinning table tennis ball. The effect could introduce errors in quantum computers that use lasers to control qubits, but might also offer a new way to couple qubits together.
