Analysis of ancient rocks from Western Australia suggests water was reaching deep inside Earth more than three billion years ago, well before modern plate tectonics may have fully developed. Researchers propose a process they call 'dripduction,' in which water-rich crust periodically sank into the mantle, helping generate magma and volcanic eruptions.
