Physicists using the ALICE experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider found a new way to probe deep inside atomic nuclei, distinguishing between competing explanations for gluon behavior. Measurements at unprecedented spatial resolution revealed structures as small as roughly a quarter the size of a proton, along with an unexpected drop in J/ψ production that conventional 'nuclear shadowing' theories struggle to explain.
