Scientists found that Arctic cyclones become especially destructive when several strike in succession, causing roughly twice as much sea ice loss as isolated storms and producing impacts that persist about two and a half times longer. As Arctic ice grows thinner and weaker, the damage from these storm clusters appears to be increasing. Researchers warn the pattern could create a feedback loop that accelerates future Arctic ice loss as climate change continues to weaken the ice pack.
