Researchers say a foundational organic chemistry concept taught in textbooks for nearly 100 years may be incorrect. The team found that the inductive effect in neutral molecules appears to extend only across a single chemical bond rather than gradually weakening over three or four bonds as traditionally taught, a correction they argue could simplify how organic chemistry is taught and strengthen future research.
