The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet, with no hurricanes forming even as the basin passed its historical climatological peak around September 10. Meteorologists attribute the lull largely to a strong El Niño pattern, which tends to suppress Atlantic storm formation through increased wind shear, and forecasters have discussed the possibility of setting records for the longest stretch without a hurricane. The National Hurricane Center is nonetheless monitoring an area of low pressure in the Atlantic that could develop into a tropical depression later this week.
