A persistent heat dome is settling over the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast US, with the Climate Prediction Center forecasting above-average temperatures across nearly the entire lower 48 states through September 29. In Knoxville, forecasters expect hot, humid conditions Friday and Saturday with heat index values near 100°F and highs in the 90s, along with spotty thunderstorms, before rain chances increase and temperatures cool next week. The extended heat has prompted local relief efforts, including Vestal United Methodist Church opening as a cooling center on September 15 to help residents cope with temperatures back in the 90s.
