A former Syrian intelligence officer under Bashar al-Assad was sentenced to 60 years in a US prison for torturing prisoners during the civil war. Separately, the BBC reported new evidence that Assad's regime planned the kidnapping of American journalist Austin Tice for weeks before his 2012 abduction, with the operation allegedly approved directly by Assad.
