A first scientific study into the catastrophic Nepal-Tibet glacier collapse last month found that climate breakdown probably weakened the roughly 200,000 square metre glacier before it gave way. The collapse sent an avalanche of 110 million cubic metres of snow and ice into the valley below, triggering floods that killed over a thousand people. Researchers identified unusually warm conditions preceding the collapse as a destabilizing factor, adding to evidence linking glacial hazards in the Himalayas to accelerating global heating.
