Intense, slow-moving thunderstorms struck eastern Spain in mid-September 2026, first hitting Castilla-La Mancha before moving to the east coast, bringing torrential rain, strong winds and large hail to Valencia and Barcelona. The storms caused severe flooding and at least one death, according to Guardian weather tracker reporting. A separate GDACS flood alert confirmed a flood event in Spain running from September 9-11, 2026, which caused one death. The flooding disrupted communities across the affected regions and added to a string of extreme weather events in Europe this year.
