Researchers identified a population of cells that can initiate programmed cell death, survive the process, and then help rapidly rebuild damaged tissue, with their descendants becoming more resistant to future injury. The mechanism could offer new avenues for improving wound healing, but scientists caution it may also explain how some cancers return after treatment.
