A World Meteorological Organization assessment found that rivers worldwide experienced one of their driest years in over three decades in 2025, with global freshwater reserves - including groundwater, lakes and rivers - depleted to 42% below normal levels. The Guardian has also launched a year-long 'Our Rivers' project examining threats facing the world's major waterways, highlighting their ecological, economic and cultural importance amid mounting climate pressures.
