Slow-moving, intense thunderstorms broke out across eastern Spain, first striking Castilla-La Mancha before moving to the east coast, where torrential rain, strong winds and large hail caused severe flooding in Barcelona and Valencia. At least one person was killed in the flooding, which The Guardian's Weather Tracker reported occurred earlier in the week (around September 16-17). The storms continued overnight, compounding damage in the region, while forecasters separately noted Japan was bracing for an approaching typhoon.
