Papua New Guinea experienced a cluster of earthquakes on September 20, including a magnitude 6.4 quake 49 km NNE of Kainantu reported by USGS, along with GDACS-recorded quakes of magnitude 6.4 (104 km depth, affecting an estimated 50,000 people at MMI V) and magnitude 5.4 (116 km depth, affecting about 40,000 people). All were classified as "green" alerts, indicating limited expected impact, but the succession of moderate-to-strong tremors in the same region within hours highlights ongoing seismic activity in this earthquake-prone part of the Pacific. No deaths, injuries or significant damage have been reported from these events so far.
