The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity report for September 10-16 documented ongoing or continuing eruptive activity at numerous volcanoes worldwide, including Krakatau and Dukono and Ibu and Karangetang and Lewotolok in Indonesia, Aira/Sakurajima in Japan, Great Sitkin and Kilauea in the United States, Kanlaon and Mayon in the Philippines, and Klyuchevskoy and Krasheninnikov in Russia. Activity ranged from Strombolian eruptions and ash plumes rising up to several kilometers, to continuous lava effusion, elevated sulfur dioxide emissions, and crater incandescence. Most volcanoes remained at low-to-moderate alert levels (Level 2 of 4, or Yellow on aviation color codes), with local authorities advising exclusion zones of 2-4 km around active craters. No casualties or major damage were reported from any of the listed volcanoes during the reporting period.
