A large study of the Amazon found that protecting forests already standing—by preventing wildfire and logging damage—delivers the greatest biodiversity benefits and nearly matches deforestation prevention for protecting carbon. Restoration remains valuable in already-cleared areas but proved more expensive and less effective on its own.
